The Konalu City Lead was designed to address the problems of walking a dog in the city. This innovative design adds functionality of adjustable length and tethering ability built right into a traditional webbing leash. A custom cam buckle was designed that allows the user to adjust the length with a quick pull and stay put at any length. This inventive lead with mechanism was awarded a U.S. patent.
The lead and buckles went through various stages of prototyping. We started with existing parts to create a proof of concept and moved the design into Solidworks. 3-D printing was used to make samples of both the cam and tether buckles for evaluation and testing. We further validated the buckles with metal samples made from castings of the the final 3-D printed samples. All of this research and testing made the transition and translation of the product to the supplier easier.
As a bonus feature, we added a loop to the end of the handle so the lead can be worn keeping the hands free for ball throwing, coffee cups, etc.The City Lead was so successful in addressing the needs of the user, it not only fulfilled the desire of city dwellers, but dogs and their people everywhere.
